On February 8, 1982, there was an intense communication between the ACC-BS [Area Control Center of Brasília-DF] and the VASP aircraft of flight VP169 to report and confirm unusual traffic in the vicinity of Belo Horizonte [30 miles to the south], State of Minas Gerais. Around 06:49Z, the VP169 triggered the ACC-BS asking:
“Could you report if there is any traffic on your scope there at the nine-hours position of Vasp uno Meia nine?”
The ACC-BS replied that it had not detected anything yet. The VP169 pilot then describes:
“We are looking at one, apparently, an aircraft but the lighting changes systematically in color; it is orange, red, or white, apparently it looked like traffic with the lights on but as there is a very marked color variation we are even suspicious that it is something different”.
The ACC-BS then reinforces that it does not observe anything on the radar in the sector mentioned by VP169.
At 07:11, VP169 informs that the unidentified air traffic signaling “is intense, very intense as if it were an aircraft with” auwarys “on, I would like Brasilia to verify this observation for data purposes possibly, ok?”
At 07:18Z, the pilot of VP 169 was already seventy miles from Barra do Piraí, in the State of Rio de Janeiro, when he could still see the brightness in the 9-hours position in relation to his aircraft. At that moment the ACC-BS informs that it is “receiving a point from fifty miles south of Belo Horizonte-MG, a point exactly at the 9-hours position, following the exact impulse of VASP 196”. Also according to the ACC-BS operator, the object with intense luminosity “precisely follows the VP 169”.
At the same time, another aircraft of flight QD 177 [Transbrasil], fifty miles from Barra do Piraí-RJ, informs the ACC-BS that “this luminosity that the VASP has been reporting we are observing; is in our 11-hours position, ok?
The next day, February 9, 1982, at 06:51Z, an aircraft on the same VP 169 route as the previous day, contacts the ACC-BS to ask if the ACC-BS was “receiving something, accusing something in our 9-hours position “, because the pilot was” seeing a light here, very strong intensity, we would like to approach”. The pilot of the VP asks for authorization to approach the direction of the light in order to verify what it was.
The ACC-BS says that possibly the intense light may be the city of Montes Claros-MG, nearby, but the pilot of the VP169 says that it cannot be, because the light he saw was very high. The VP169 is then allowed to check by approaching and with a bow in the direction facing the light well ahead of the aircraft from a distance. The VP169 then reports that its radar does not report anything in that sector and the aircraft returns to its original course, but continues to perceive small fluctuations in colors, sometimes settling in a light color. VP 169 approaches Belo Horizonte and descends.
The next day, February 10, 1982, at 06:44Z on the same bow with the same flight VP169, there is a pilot’s communication to investigate the occurrence of unforeseen traffic in the vicinity of his route towards Belo Horizonte. VP 169 talks to the pilot of flight QD 035 of TRANSBRASIL about the existence of a light spotted by the two aircraft at a position of 10 degrees above the horizon near the city of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais.
