A pilot and AT controllers reported a UFO near Pirassununga-SP [1972]

DEC 14th, 1972. TWR / APP-RADAR SBSP [Control Tower and Approach Control of the São Paulo Airport]

Translation of the report [by J.V.R.F. 2TEN ESP CTA / Head of ACC / TWR / APP-RADAR SBSP]

“At approximately 16:20Z, TWR-KP [Control Tower of the Campinas-SP Airport] warned that it spotted an unidentified object in the western sector of Campinas-SP. At 16:42Z, the VP-232 aircraft B-111 prefix PP-SRT, having taken off from SBSP / SBBR FL 280 [from Congonhas-SP Airport to Brasília-DF Airport, at 28,000 altitude level] was consulted by APP SBSP [São Paulo Airport Approach Control] on the possibility of diversion in order to fly over the west sector of the Airport Campinas-SP for the verification and possible identification of the object. The pilot of the aircraft agreed.

When the object was spotted by VP-232, the pilot reported that it was apparently a balloon at FL 200 [20,000 ft]. Later, he rectified the initial information, saying it was not a balloon, as it had its own movement.

He identified it as an object with a rounded shape, white in color, and it was not possible to have a more perfect identification since the object apparently was at level 4000 [40.000ft] above, and due to problems of autonomy, he would be forced to abandon the identification mission of the object, following his landing at the SBBR [Brasília-DF], the pilot detailed, however, that the object was on the VCP radial 260 [Viracopos Airport – Campinas-SP] in the vicinity of the TIETÊ vertical. He also reported that at a given moment, when the aircraft was already leveled at FL 280 [28.000ft], the object tried to approach the VP-232, having then moved away from the aircraft, heading northwest in an apparent ascension.

Later, at the station’s frequency, he heard from TWR SBK with TWR SBYS [Aerodrome of AFA – Brazilian Air Force Academy, in Pirassununga-SP], consulting the possibility of some jet aircraft from the SBYS Cadet School taking off with the purpose of verifying and possibly identifying the metallic surface object (provoked reflection of sunlight), with a triangular or conical shape, in the vicinity of TIETÊ approximately on the radial RDL 250/260 of VCP with an approximate altitude of 40,000 ft.

At 17:32Z, we heard contact from TWR SBYS with TWR SBKP, reporting that the object was near Pirassununga-SP. At 21:30Z, SBSP reported that an aircraft spotted an unidentified object (allegedly the same) in the vicinity of Avaré-SP, having reported to APP SP that it was to send a report to ACC SBSP.

The PP-SRT VP-232 pilot, after returning from the flight made by SBBR, he also contacted RADAR SBSP and the supervisor / class leader Commander JSA, informing that he had the opportunity to take two photographs of the object, making himself available to the authorities for any further clarification that may be necessary as well as the photographs after they are revealed./ JVRF 2TEN ESP CTA / Head of ACC / TWR / APP-RADAR SBSP /”
